The iconic Strand Book Stall is today 66yrs old. Founded by the legendary and much-loved bookseller Padmashri, T.N. Shanbhag, it has nurtured three generations of post-independence Indians. Its USP was and is top quality books, often imported from US or UK, at very affordable prices. Rarely did a book lover go away empty handed once he entered this treasure house of books, because the choice was so delectable and the owner and his staff so knowledgeable.
T.N. Shanbhag’s daughter, Vidya Virkar, joined the business 20 yrs ago and set up the cult Strand Book Festivals which is a date in every reader’s diary. She also opened Strand Bangalore which once again became the most famous bookshop there. She introduced book-readings to the reading public when such events were unknown. She also opened several campus bookstores in Infosys and Wipro in different cities by invitation from Mr. Narayana Murthy and Mr. Azim Premji respectively.
And now, the original Strand Mumbai is holding The Strand Legacy Sale at Kamalnayan Bajaj Hall, Bajaj Bhavan, Nariman Point, from Sat 26 April – Mon 5 May. The selections will be hand-picked books of lasting value from Strand’s famous archives. The discounts will be so high that one should be able to pick up basketfuls of books at little cost.
